Logging a spot
Updated August 18, 2026
This guide shows you how to log a spot in Inshore, and what gets recorded for you automatically.
Steps
- Tap Log on the home screen, wherever you are. You don't need to open a spot first.
- Confirm the match. If you're near a spot you've fished before, Inshore matches you to it automatically and shows "Logging at <spot name>." Confirm it, add details now, or tap to create a new spot instead if the match is wrong.
- Add details, if it's a new spot. If you're not near an existing spot, Inshore creates a new, unnamed spot at your location along with the log, and shows a New spot created banner with an Add details button. Tap it to name the spot now, or leave it for later.
- Rate the visit, Poor, Slow, Fair, Good, or Hot, and add any catches now or later. See Adding catches to logs for the full flow.
- Save. Conditions for that exact moment are recorded automatically (see below).
What fills in automatically
Once you save, Inshore records automatically:
- Tide phase, direction, and height from the closest tide station to your spot.
- Water and air temperature, wind speed and direction, and barometric pressure with its trend from the nearest NOAA weather station.
The closest tide station and the nearest weather station aren't always the same place, so Inshore looks each one up separately for the most accurate reading at your exact spot.
You can also add a few things by hand that a station can't tell you:
- Water color and clarity, for when a stained creek doesn't match the station report.
- A manual water temperature, alongside the auto-captured one, for when the two disagree.
- A manual pressure reading, if you'd rather log your own gauge than the station's.
Logging a past trip
Forgot to log something from an earlier trip? Open the spot, add a new log, and set the date and time to the past before saving. Inshore looks up the tide and weather conditions for that exact moment, so your history stays complete even when you log it late.
Common questions
What if Inshore matches me to the wrong spot? Tap to create a new spot instead, right from the match banner. Nothing is locked in until you save.
How close do I need to be to a spot for Inshore to match it automatically? That's adjustable in Settings > Spot Matching Distance: 25, 50, or 75 yards.
